there is NOTHING else like them. A notorious aristocrat anarchist, she
equally hated venal shopkeepers, decayed aristocrats and modern France
en toto.
A very high aristocrat and her father's only child
- thus she marked the dead-end of her noble house and from childhood on
wanted to be a man, a soldier, a 'destroyer'. She was a true female
misogynist. Her mannish pen name was 'Gyp' and she drew illustrations
for her book under the name 'Petit Bob' and even went through a
cross-dressing period. She was not a lesbian but her heterosexual
feelings were warped by self-loathing of her feminine 'weakness'. One
of the most fascinating books I've ever read is "The Notorious Life of
Gyp: Right Wing Anarchist in Fin-de-Siecle France" by Silverman.
I have collected and will offer some of her rare 19th century
lithographs and feel that they show a brilliant talent that was in many
ways terribly warped. She was, if you study her life, quite insane and
I consider her work as 'outsider art' of tremendous visual impact.
One of the maddening faults of her bookplates is that the publishers
cut the captions and 'Bob' signature indiscriminately when fitting the
lithographs to her books. The plates NEVER have borders it is part of
