Size Of Mat Window- 12" x 23", Frame 21" x 31" e
Albert Beck Wenzell is best known for his depictions of the fashionable society of the Gilded Age, and as creator of the "Wenzell Girl", a turn of the century icon of the American woman along the lines of similar images by Gibson and Christy. He also illustrated many books including "House Of Mirth" by Edith Wharton and contributed drawings for the popular magazines of the day such as The Ladies’ Home Journal, Harper’s Monthly, The Century, Cosmopolitan, and The Saturday Evening Post. His works are currently represented in the collections of major museums, notably the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco which together own sixty of his paintings and drawings. The large cycle of murals he executed for the New Amsterdam Theater in New York has recently been restored.
This masterful study of the female figure from life displays Wenzell's clear grasp of the human form and grounding in the classical tradition of figurative art.
Although unsigned, the provenance for this work is excellent. This drawing was in the private collection of a member of the Wenzell family until 1967 when it was sold to the Maxwell Gallery in San Francisco and included in a retrospective of Wenzell's work. The cover of the catalog for that exhibition is reproduced below. At that time, it was acquired by La Belle Epoque Gallery in Los Angeles, which has now consigned it for sale to Emporio Leopardo. A certificate of authenticity is available from the consignor.
