The
Golden Age of Illustration
Victorian & Edwardian Illustrations |
|
From
the 1860s to the 1930s, there was a blooming movement of the illustrator's
art in America and England. During this period notables such as Arthur
Rackham and Charles Dana Gibson, Maxfield Parrish, J.C. Leyendecker
and Fanny Cory, transformed
the art of children's book illustration.
The movement developed from the advances in printing technology that
permitted accurate and inexpensive art, coupled with a high demand
by the public for new graphic illustrations.

Charles
Dana Gibson
Charles
Dana Gibson was born in Roxbury, MA. By age eleven, he was an apprentice to
architect George Post. He also formally trained at the Art Students League.
He is most well known for his illustrations of beautiful women during the
early twentieth century. The women were refined, aloof and fashionable. Gibson's
women characterized the ideal American lady at the time. So was born "The
Gibson Girl". Gibson later bought Life Magazine and worked as the editor
until the 1930's.
150+
Gibson illustrations include;
Award winning magazine covers for Life and Scribner's, College Girls, The
Century Magazine and Harper's Weekly. Posters that assisted in the war effort
for the Army and Navy. Also, dozens of his famous Edwardian Gibson Girl illustrations.
