HENRY FRANCIS FARNY - Orig IVORY ENGRAVING - 1883

HENRY FRANCIS FARNY (1847-1916) started his art career as an illustrator for Harper's Weekly. After a trip to Europe to study landscape painting, he returned to work as an illustrator for magazines, children's books, and circus posters. In 1881, he traveled west to the Dakota Territory and became enamored with the Native American culture. He spent the rest of his life trying to capture the Indian's everyday life as it was before the reservations. Farny was the founder and director of the Cincinnati Arts Students League.

This original hand engraving on ivory with ink and light color washes, possesses the photographic quality that destinguishes a Farney piece of art. It features the maritime subject matter that he was also fascinated with, specifically fishermen at Provincetown Harbor. It is signed and dated, 1883 in the bottom right corner. This image was created by etching the image with a sharp instrument. The surface would then be flooded with ink which was then carefully wiped off leaving behind the ink in the carved lines which would define the image. There are slight blemishes to the surface near the bottom where the two timbers meet and at both of the upper corners in the "sky" area. Additionally, there is a very light blemish that runs vertically through the middle of the piece, as well as a 1" scratch in the legs of the figures at the right. Otherwise, the piece is in excellent condition and it's aesthetic quality is unaffected by the aforementioned defects. The outside dimensions of the frame is 11.25" x 9.25"
