ARTIST'S DESCRIPTION OF PAINTING: THIS IS A PAINTING WHICH WAS CREATED EARLY IN MY ROCK AND ROLL ICON ART CAREER. THE MAIN body of my work at that time consisted of "I SAW ELVIS" SCENARIOS (created within the perspective of a Grandma Moses/ Howard Finster folk style.) LATER ON, MY WORK BRANCHED OUT TO INCLUDE OTHER ROCK AND ROLL ICONS OF THE 1960'S AND 70'S. IN THIS VIGNETTE FROM MY IMAGINATION, ELVIS HAS ESCAPED THE HUSTLE AND BUSTLE OF FAME BY FAKING HIS DEATH. IN ORDER TO SLIDE IN TO ANONYMITY AND SUPPORT HIMSELF, HE HAS TAKEN A JOB IN A DEPARTMENT STORE SELLING SHOES. HERE HE IS ENACTING THE CINDERELLA FABLE. HE IS SLIDING A LOVELY SHOE ON TO A MAIDEN'S FOOT. HE PROUDLY WEARS AN OLD GOLD JUMPSUIT AND HIS "T.C.B" BELT WHICH STANDS FOR "TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS." ONE THING I TRULY ADMIRE ABOUT ELVIS IS THAT HE NEVER GOT ABOVE HIS "RAISINS". HE SEEMED TO RETAIN HIS SIMPLE COUNTRY ROOTS, AND RESPECT FOR PEOPLE IN EVERY CLASS AND AVENUE OF SOCIETY.
ABOUT MY FINSTER CONNECTION: The Reverend Howard Finster has been enormously influential to my work. He "freed me up" to paint pertinent scenes from my heart and my life. I had stagnated for years (after receiving my BFA. from one of the top Art Institutes in America.) I had no direction, no passion for my work any more...until I saw a tiny picture of Finster's work in a newspaper. It sang out to me like a choir of angels. Interestingly enough, about ten years later I was invited to participate in a joint show with Finster. That was shortly before his death in the late 1990's. I will soon post a photograph from that show (of Finster and me.) Other examples of work in my EBay Gallery are so different from the one in this particular listing that they actually resemble works from classical academia. PRIMARY ORIGINAL of this painting sold to a collector over ten years ago.
From time to time I am either inspired or commissioned to paint
a hand painted VERSION of my previously sold paintings. This is a
personal favorite among my inventory of original images and I was
inspired to re-paint this image in 2007. Although the piece in this
listing is not the PRIMARY ORIGINAL, it is ENTIRELY hand painted, and
has taken me at least seventy eighty hours to create.ABOUT MY CAREER AS AN ARTIST: I have been a working artist for over thirty years.
