A Superb Ca.1825 Miniature Risque Portrait
To start off, the frame is a real dandy from the period with brass hanger. It is plaster-over-wood with silver gilding that has aged to a very mellow patina. There are wear to it, especially at the bottom, and measures 3.25 x 3.75 inches. I've cleansed the glass and air-dried it and placed an acid-free backing with its original wooden board on top of it. This has been papertaped for easy access. This portrait really needs an additonal glass on the reverse to display its risque painting. This I will leave to the buyer. For now, the package is nicely protected from dust and bugs.
The oval miniature is on ivory; he looks like Shawn Penn. This portrait was likely a present by his friends and paid for by them as a going-away present. Perhaps he was getting married and commissioned an artist to paint the very risque reverse?
Obviously, the portrait was done by a very confident artist, and the reverse was painted by someone who specialized in this sort of painting. It is in the style of 18th century, painted ca.1825. Although caricature-like, this artist incorporates many designs within a very limited space. This is the finest and the most detailed painting that I have ever seen of the subject, a real museum piece and very rare. It belongs in the finest collection of this genre.
