"Zen Hummingbird" is an original watercolor by artist Karin Novak-Neal who is best known for her incredibly colorful tropicals, florals and leaves paintings.

 This painting is an actual depiction of a real life occurance. This particular hummingbird had flown in through an open door in the artists' studio and was trying to draw nectar from another painting (a hibiscus floral) that the artist was working on at the time. Not being able to do that, the bird finally just "passed out" from exhaustion (on Karin's work table) and went into a state of suspended animation. Karin's husband eventually revived the bird by feeding it red sugar water (as seen in this painting)with a dropper and then after several minutes, it just got up and flew off. The artist took several photos of the hummingbird as it lay (passed out) on an open Japanese character book on her work table and decided to paint the entire scene as it really was. The whole experience was surreal! This story and an actual photograph accompany the painting.
