A Beautifully Detailed, Original Plan of the Chapel of the Good Shepherd at Blackwell's Island in New York City, New York. HAND-COLORED. Frederick C. Withers, Architect. From the American Architect and Building News, July 20, 1889.
Architect Frederick Clark
Withers planned this handsome structure, and a $85,000 gift in 1889 of George
Bliss to the New York Episcopal Mission Society for its ministry of comfort and
hope to the unwanted poor and sick in the surrounding almshouses.
The chapel's
bell, now in Good Shepherd Plaza, summoned them not only to worship, but daily
from their straw beds to long listless hours of loneliness. (from the Roosevelt Historical Society Website)
This picture is extremely hard to find, as the American Architect and Building News not only had a very small circulation during that time, but very few were actually preserved or colored as this has been. It measures 12.5 by 8.75 inches. Has a mat border and foam core backing (not attached to the picture). The whole picture measures 15 by 11.25 inches (with border). Finely detailed and beautifully hand-colored. Shrink wrapped.
Plan is in VG+ condition.
This is a highly unusual, scarce item. See our other auctions for more hand-colored original plans.
