AN AUSPICIOUS INDIAN ARTIST - PART TIME PRINCE!

Raja Ravi Varma (1848-1906) was born in Kilimanoor Palace as the son of Umamba Thampuratti and Neelakandan Bhattathiripad. At the age of seven years he started drawing on the palace walls using charcoal. His uncle Raja Raja Varma noticed the talent of the child and gave preliminary lessons on painting.

At the age of 14, Ayilyam Thirunal Maharaja took him to Travancore Palace and he was taught water painting by the palace painter Rama Swamy Naidu. After 3 years Theodor Jenson, a British painter taught him oil painting. Most of his paintings are based on Hindu epic stories and characters. In 1873 he won the First Prize at the Madras Painting Exhibition. He became a world famous Indian painter after winning in 1873 Vienna Exhibition. This is the first of a series of his prints we are auctioning.

This beautiful piece is one of three we already have in-stock, others are on their way and we also have most of the complete set of greeting cards by Ravi Varma which we will be listing shortly.

Each of the three Oil-on-Canvas-Board prints which we will be listing are 20+ years old, while still in outstanding shape there is a roughness to the edges which we attribute to the Indian style of framing and not to the original artwork themselves.  These are gorgeous pieces and framed properly are to be treasured!

This piece is 18" x 14" and has to be seen to appreciate the beauty or the quality of the work.  We can only ESTIMATE the shipping weight, we will be charging actual weight, actual insurance based on selling price and $5.00 for the first box we ship to a client, $3.00 for the second and all consequtive boxes are free of handling and materials charges.

This artist has chosen not to sign this reproduction, should you be interested in any Varma reproductions we will happily attain them for you and should you like the Varma signature added to the piece we can do this also.  Any commissioned pieces would be done on fabric canvas thereby decreasing the shipping costs.

The other pieces we will be listing are shown below.  We have been contacted by NUMEROUS clients interested in the Varma piece called "The Lady with the Lamp".  Actually this piece was not done by Raja Ravi Varma but rather by S. L. Haldankar from Bombay (now Mumbai) and is entitled "Glow of Hope".

If you would like more photos or information please feel free to contact us, we are happy to provide you with anything you feel you need.

For those interested in an estimate on the shipping we expect that packed this piece will weigh between 2 and 3lbs and our zip code is 60175, if you go to usps.com and enter our zip code and yours you should get an idea as to the shipping costs.

Please visit our store for numerous high-quality items which are listed with a Buy It Now price or submit best offer.  We try to carry merchandise for everyone!

Many people get confused with the words Vintage and Antique. Vintage means "of the period" and not necessarily a particular number of years old, for example you can have a 2007 Vintage wine.

In General, the word Antique means 100 years old. Here on eBay some categories of items are considered in the listings to be antique if prior to 1940 in age. This varies in categories. In the ART category, an antique is pre 1900 while in the collectible category under clocks an antique clock is pre 1930.

This same category lists vintage as 1930-1969 while vintage guitars are pre 1980 and vintage toy soldiers are pre 1970.

We can go on and on but the point is there is no set and fast rule on eBay concerning dating, for they themselves vary it. We honest dealers can only give our best estimate and judgment as to the items age, condition and value.

We are about to start selling some wonderful silver jewelry pieces which we have recently brought back from our Indian shopping spree.  The jewelry will be available both in the US and our Australian stores.

OUR MERCHANDISE IS NOT STRICTLY AVAILABLE TO EBAY CUSTOMERS.  WE RESERVE THE RIGHT TO END AN AUCTION IF

We have entered into partnership with an outstanding Australian dealer. While this piece is located in the US if purchased by any of our Australia, Japanese or New Zealand clients we do offer you the option to wait for the piece to be delivered with our bi-monthly deliveries to the Australian store in Queensland, your foreign shipment will be based on the weight of your piece against the total weight of all pieces.  Please check shipping charges from our Queensland location to your address to determine if the piggy-back method works for you.

We do not quote shipping prices on our merchandises due to the fact that we do not keep the items pre-wrapped prior to shipment. Once a client has finished buying if they choose to take advantage of combined shipping
(7 days or unlimited days for clients who have signed up to receive our newsletter)
the quote we would have originally given you would be inaccurate.

Domestic buyers (USA) must take out insurance on all of our breakable items, the amount is based on the purchase price but the eBay system requires a price be submitted.  Your invoice will show the actual cost of insurance.

Foreign insurance often times is covered completely by the shipping option chosen, we have listed the insurance as optional and again the $3.00 is merely a quote.

We make a great effort in providing you with photographs, measurements, and whatever detail and faults with each item as possible. We are not professsional Antique Appraisers!

We ask you to contact us should you have any problems with your item but we consider it to be the responsibility of the buyer to study the numerous and expensive photographs we have taken, measurements listed and research done on each piece. If you have ANY questions or wish for additional photographs from any angle please email us and ask for them prior to bidding for all listing are sold "As Is" except for particularly unusual circumstances, we are honest sellers and treat our clients the way we would want to be treated.

We have had the rare occassion where a client pointed out a problem with a piece that we issued them a full credit for as we would want done for us, this has happened twice in the five years we have been doing business.  Our former policy was 3 day return but due to too many clients suffering from buyers remorse and taking advantage of us we have changed the policy.

We will be glad to provide you with whatever we can to make you comfortable with your purchase. We make postal insurance manditory for breakable items being sold within the country.

All items are re-inspected prior to shipping to make sure that the condition has not changed since our listing, if it has we will notify the buyer of the changes and leave the option to take the piece or not up to him/her.

As most oversea's shipping options come with a certain amount of insurance we make the purchase of additional insurance optional. We still recommend that on high end items you purchase insurance above and beyond that of the insurance provided by the carrier.

We do not profit off insurance and consider that policy to be just wrong, insurance is for your benefit. While we make great efforts to make sure that items arrive to our customers intact things do happen, items got lost along route or buried under a pile of other boxes. Should your piece arrive to you in a damaged condition we will be there to help you file the claim.
