You're bidding on an original scenic sketch created by artist/scenic
designer Lewis Folden.
I have enjoyed a thirty year career that began
with a Master of Fine Arts degree from Yale. As an award-winning scenic
designer my work has appeared in many theatres -- Washington DC's
Kennedy Center, Philadelphia's Peoples' Light & Theatre Co., Woolly
Mammoth, The Arden Theatre, The Boston Ballet, Miami City Ballet,
and Minneapolis' Children's Theatre Co. to name just a few. My work
has appeared on both coasts and has traveled as far afield as London
and Prague. I've taught at SUNY Buffalo, George Mason U, Georgetown
U, and the U of Maryland at Towson.
My design work incorporates the talent and skills of an artist, but
the expression is a very public one. As time has passed, I've felt
the need to paint and create in a more personal and intimate way.
That is the part of me that you are seeing on eBay and which I'd like
to share with you.
Scenic sketches are detailed miniature guides that a scenic designer creates and presents to explain his conception of the scenery for a theatrical play. In this case, a ballet. The choreographer and other designers are dependent on these sketches for their own work, and the dancers rely on them to know what their ultimate surroundings will look like. This sketch is for a production by American Festival Ballet Co. in 1988.
This sketch is painted on textured artist's watercolor paper in the center of a white field. The medium is watercolor mixed with acrylic medium and graphite. I've left it unframed and unmatted so that the purchaser can choose his own mode of mounting.
The final backdrop was painted on strips of burlap and stood a combined 24' tall and 40' wide.
