Morris Blackburn, 1902-1979, American. “Obnjo”. Oil on Canvas laid down on board, 20 X 16. Signed Lower Right and titled under the signature. In Fine condition; no crackling, chipping, flaking or any other paint loss. No restoration of any kind. Framed in a period frame which may be original. Morris Atkinson Blackburn was a painter, printmaker, graphic artist and teacher who was born in Philadelphia where he lived and worked for most of his life. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts with Henry McCarter and Arthur B Carles and studied under a Guggenheim Fellowship from 1952-1953. He exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Society of Independent Artists, The Art Institute if Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum, The Whitney Museum and at many other prestigious institutions. Blackburn traveled widely and made several trips to the American Southwest where he painted landscapes and Native American Subjects, of which this piece is an example. His work can be found in the permanent collections of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. The Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Library of Congress, the Butler Institute of American Art, the New Jersey State Museum and the Museum of New Mexico at Santa Fe.
