Philosophy of the Artist
Carey
has studied art, animation and design at the prestigious Art Center
College of Design in Pasadena, CA, as well as at the respected
University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA). She obtained her
Masters of Fine Art from the Film and Theater Department, in June of
2002. In addition, Carey has a Juris Doctor degree from Pepperdine Law
School, in Malibu, CA, 1985 and three business degrees from the
University of Wisconsin-Madison campus. She combines this varied
education into the world of film. She works as a Director/Producer,
Production Manager and Editor and is a published writer. She enjoys
being on both sides of the camera, and has even worked as a stand-in
for Cameron Diaz! She finds being both an Attorney and an Artist helps
her to achieve her career role as a Producer, by allowing her
to understand all aspects of film, tv, and video production, including
the art direction and look of a film.
Her works on paper are
varied and painterly, ranging from delicate pen and ink drawings, to
the strong, bold use of pastels with a Winslow Homer watercolor feel.
Her love of color shows in her often whimisical and playful oil and
acrylic paintings. Photographs bring out the alter ego of her subjects
as well as document and record the environment.
As an avid
traveler of Europe, Asia, South America, and Africa, and a one time
student of law in London, England, she has developed an eye for exotic
colors, textures and patterns. These design elements are evident
throughout her works. She is primarily interested in the playfulness of
innovative color and composition in close ups of butterflies, birds and
flowers. The works of Degas, Matisse, and Lautrec play an instrumental
role in her portraiture, whereby she employs a broad, gestural dramatic
line. Carey draws on a personal vocabulary of evocative, and often
theatrical images.
