HALL OF SATURN, PITTI PALACE, FLORENCE, ITALY.-The Pitti Palace at Florence is still used as the residence of the King and Queen when they visit Florence, but it possesses for mankind an infinitely greater value than that arising from its being an abode of royalty. It is a marvelous treasure-house of art, containing probably a greater number of fine paintings than any other building in the world. If Europe should lose every other gallery of art save this, it would still be rich. To copy some of its rare works an artist must make application five years in advance, so many are there who desire the privilege. Moreover, the decorations of the halls containing these pictures are worthy receptacles for the works themselves. The lofty ceilings themselves are covered with paintings framed in gilded and statue-laden cornices. Beneath are exquisitely inlaid floors. Put out your hand, and it may touch a table of mosaic, malachite, or lapis-lazuli, the cost of which was probably $100, 000. Sit down to rest, and you perceive that you are in a chair of satin, silk brocade or velvet. Look round you in bewilderment, and you behold elaborately decorated walls, on which from gorgeous roof to sculptured marble dado. Hang the world's great masterpieces! While even the doors through which we pass have frames of variegated marble. One really needs to make one visit here before he can appreciate a single picture. Close by the door leading into another of these gorgeous apartments one sees in this illustration that sweetest and most tender of all Raphael's paintings, the "Madonna of the Chair."

This photographic view was printed in an antique book of prints made expressly for careful observation and framing - a compilation of faithful delineations of the works of God and man designed not only for visual appeal, but to stimulate a longing for a visit either to the Old World or the New. The photo is clear and obviously the work of a highly skilled professional 19th century photographer.
The back side of the print is blank. There is a nice wide border completely surrounding the entire image and detailed inscription, making this very suitable for framing or giving as a gift to someone with a connection to the place. Both the photograph and the detailed inscription give a glimpse of history rarely found elsewhere. Many were instantaneous moments from the past, rare and unique, historical, and impressive.
The shot you are looking at is probably one of the first times this subject was photographed in such clarity! It wasn't until 1839 that the first successful "daguerreotypes" were taken. Until 1839 the only way to permanently capture an image, was to either draw or paint it. Some painters employed the technique of reflecting an image onto a ground glass, and tracing it onto a surface, the same concept used in photography.

My shipping procedures...
A lot of care and expense is put into making sure your prints arrive undamaged. Prints are carefully bagged in plastic sleeves, gently rolled, and mailed in a sturdy cardboard mailing tube. Larger orders and Priority Mail orders are usually shipped flat between sturdy cardboard using creative methods to prevent the USPS from bending or damaging your prints. A large tube mailer may be used for larger prints depending upon what appears to be the safest way to ship. PLEASE BE SURE TO HANDLE YOUR PRINTS WITH CARE TO AVOID DAMAGING THEM WHEN REMOVING THEM FROM THE TUBE OR PACKAGE.
