This is a genuine vintage engraved portrait titled "Francis Gross F. S. A.." It is in excellent condition and was published in Glasgow by Blackie & Sons in the1840's. Capt Gross at some point in his life met Robert Burns who wrote some verses about him. The portrait is accompanied by a section of detailed biographical text regarding this person who was a soldier and published author.
This print has been cleaned using proper conservation techniques and is free of age toning and foxing spots. The overall size is approx. 8.50 by 11 inches. This is not a reproduction. This is a vintage engraving over 160 years old and guaranteed to be as described.
Steel Engraving: A print produced by carving the lines of an image into a metal plate (copper or steel) with a tool called a burin. The lines produced by the carving are inked, and a dampened sheet of paper is pressed on to the plate. The ink is transferred to the paper producing the image. This type of printing was introduced in the 15th century and is a form of intaglio printing.
