This is a print on paper removed from the 1923 First Edition The Birds of California, by William Leon Dawson.
As William Leon Dawson was preparing his massive, four-volume Birds of California for publication in the early 1920's he arranged to include quality prints of more than 100 paintings by Allan Cyril Brooks (February 15, 1869 - January 3, 1946), an ornithologist and bird artist who was born in India but lived much of his life in Canada. Some of the paintings were done specifically for this publication and some were of works done earlier in the 20th century.
The Birds of California was published in 1923 by the South Moulton Company and was sold by subscription only. In subsequent years, Brooks teamed with The National Geographic Society on a series of articles and publications. The pictures from those publications cannot be compared with the fine quality of the original 1923 prints.
This original 1923 plate is beautifully printed on heavy coated paper--blank on the reverse; and the tissue guard which has protected it for more than 85 years will be included. The tissue guard is printed with the name of the plate and the size (compared to life) of the illustration.
