"The story of the Lost Masterpieces" Imagine, if you can, misplacing more then 3,000,00 magnificent reproductions of the work's greatest paintings! It actually happened...and this is the true story of the discovery of that lost treasure: It seems that back in 1937, immediately following the depression years, a voluntary national committee for art appreciation was formed. The goal of the committee was to create an art program that would give the public a well-needed morale lift to bring them out of the doldrums of the depression. It was the committee's decision to reproduce, as perfectly as humanly possible, a collection of the world's greatest masterpieces and make them available to the public at a price within the reach of nearly everyone. A specially selected group, which consisted of such notables as Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt and many other nationally prominent people selected what--in their opinion were the greatest paintings of all time...the best painting of Matisse, the best painting of Van Gogh, Rehnoir, etc. Leading photogragers then were sent all over the worked to photograph these original masterpieces.
Making full color photographs of the original paintings was the least difficult part of the job. Now, the masterpieces has to be reproduced through the most modern techniques of the day. Original glass plates were produced, and it was found that at least 6 different colors for each painting would have to be provided and, in most cases, it was necessary to print with 8,9, and even 10 different colors in order to bring out the full realistic true fidelity of each masterpiece.
Over $1,000,000 was spent on this art project and 3,000,000 prints were made. Then, for some unknown reason, the entire project was abandoned and this fantastic collection of perfect reproductions was stored in a warehouse where they remained undisturbed for over 25 years.
When these prints were "rediscovered", leading lithographers and art critics unanimously agreed that they had never see such true fidelity in color printing. They were most impressed by the fact that these lovely masterpieces still held their marvelous original colors even aster those many years. The prints are from the original collection!
What makes these reproductions so unique is the fact that they are literally collectors items, for when they are gone it will be impossible to reproduce prints of comparable quality. Although the glass plates still exist, the conclusion and judgment of lithographers is that it would not be economically feasible to use those pates to print additional reproductions. The opinion of the lithographers summarizes as Follows:
"In 1937, when these reproductions were printed, the cost of color separation, etching and proofing of the plates would probably have cost around $150,000. and at the time that the prints were rediscovered, the must consider that the same highly skilled and technical work would cost approximately $500,000. Every time one of the glass plates is handled, it faces possible damage which would of course, completely eliminate the possibility of reproducing that particular painting. We would not consider bringing these plates into our shop unless they were first insured for an amount not less than $500,000. Then, too, we must consider that the glass plates must be cleaned. There is always the possibility that the cleansing chemicals could do tragic damage. We have no way of deterring what chemical changes have taken place in the emulsion over these many years. As much as simple dilution or structural change of the dot structure would make it impossible to reproduce the masterpiece. To analyze each of the shades of the various colors requires high powered microscopic analysis. And, then we face the almost impossible task of matching each color shade. Each time we enter into the trial and error methods of exposure of each negative, we are literally attacking brutally the delicate dot structure contained in the emulsion. Matching the ink is another major obstacle. back when these prints were rediscovered, inks were made of synthetic varnishes and pigment. The original reproductions were printed with natural varnishes and pigments which could only be developed at tremendous additional expense now.
