This is a genuine vintage engraving titled "Gorge of the Tamina. (Baths of Pfeffers.) " published in the 1836, dated on the print itself. It is in excellent condition and shows a scene deep within a mountain gorge where a wooden footbridge his shown along the course of the river. This was engraved from an original drawing by 19th century English illustrator William H. Bartlett.
This print has been cleaned using appropriate conservation techniques and is free of foxing spots. Dimensions of the print area are, minus margins, approx. 7 by 4.75 inches. The overall size of the entire print is approx. 10.50 by 8 inches. This is not a reproduction or reprint. It is an antique engraving, over 170 years old, and guaranteed to be as described.
Steel Engraving: A print produced by carving the lines of an image into a metal plate with a tool called a burin. The lines produced by the carving are inked, and a dampened sheet of paper is pressed on to the plate. The ink is transferred to the paper producing the image. This type of printing was introduced in the 15th century and is a form of intaglio printing. A wood engraving is made in a similar fashion using wooden plates of oak or beech.
