Shaw and Nodder
Hand Colored Lizard Engraving
Plate # 179
The Schincoid Lizard
Information
This is an original hand colored, copperplate engraving on hand laid paper from The Naturalist's Miscellany: or coloured figures of natural objects; drawn and described immediately from nature, by Georgius Shaw and Fredericus P. Nodder. Published in London as a series, 1789-1813. The work was published in 24 volumes illustrating birds, fish, shells, exotic marine life, butterflies, insects, reptiles, etc. All the prints were hand colored using a combination of watercolor and layered gouache and the colors are still very beautiful.
Size and Condition
This is plate #179, The Scincoid Lizard, a tropical lizard common to the Phillipines. The size of this print is approximately 5 1/2" x 9" and the condition is good with some staining at the bottom of the print which would easily mat out. There is a very faint stain where the text is on the bottom and on the back are remnants of hinging tape. There is a strong plate mark and evidence of the original book binding is on the bottom of the page. As a bonus, the original text is included.
