ALISON, eldest daughter of the late WILLIAM RAMSAY, Esq., of Bamton, in Mid-Lothian, espoused, in 1791, Sir John Marjoribanks, Bart., of Lees, in the county of Berwick, and is the present LADY MARJORIBANKS, whose portrait, from the pencil of Mrs. James Robertson, embellishes this article. The house of Marjoribanks, originally Johnston, is of ancient standing; though, like many other private fainilies, no records of its early pedigree and intermarriages are extant. Nor is the exact period when it dropped the name of Johnston (whose armorial bearings it still retains), and assumed its present patronymic, now to be ascertained. Tradition informs us, that the assumed surname, which is local, was thus derived: " When Walter, High Steward of Scotland, and ancestor of the royal house of Stuart, was married to Marjorie, only daughter of Robert Bruce, and eventually heiress to his crown, the barony of Ratho was granted by the King, as a marriage portion, to his daughter, by a charter still in existence; and that those lands, being subsequently denominated Terra de Ratho'Marjoriebankis) gave rise to the name of Marjoribanks." Several of the members of the house of Marjoribanks are mentioned in the history of Scotland, as representatives in the Scottish parliament.
