Hygeia is the daughter of Asclepius, the God of Medicine, and granddaughter of Apollo. She is often depicted as a mild and kind virgin holding a serpent which she feeds from a cup. She was the goddess of health, cleanliness and sanitation, and played an important in her father’s cult. While her father was more directly associated with healing, she was associated with the prevention of sickness and the continuation of good health. Originally the goddess of Physical Health, Hygeia is also conceived as the giver or protector of mental health.
