The first step is to obtain the appropriate clay to be transformed into a desired form. The clay used is obtained from the countryside hills mines nearby Dolores Hidalgo, Guanajuato.

Once the clay is obtained, it is ground and placed in containers, or piletas, to be soaked in water. It is left here for several days until it acquires the consistency to be kneaded by hand or feet. |
A lump of clay is transformed into a desired shape manually on a potters wheel or with a mold and then left to dry for several days. These Talavera items are molded and painted by hand. They are made of ceramic, fired twice, once before they are decorated, and a second time after they are glazed.
