How to “cure” a new mate gourd

The dried hollow gourd from the Lagenaria Vulgaris which is used as a vessel for brewing mate has to be “cured” before using it for the first time. To cure a mate one has to fill the gourd (mate) with leaves of used yerba, add a jet of hot water and leave the yerba macerate.

After 24 hours, the leaves are discarded and with the help of a spoon the remaining flesh in the gourd, which should be soft and flabby by this time, is scraped off. This process has to be repeated twice so as to clean the mate completely.
