A properly functioning catalyst makes your stove burn more efficiently. Catalysts are designed to make use of the chemical energy that escapes up the chimney when wood is burned. They convert this energy into useful heat as it lessens chimney creosote build up and air pollution.
The life expectancy of a unit is about 6 years. Catalysts can last longer but it is recommended they be changed every 6 years for maximum efficiency of the stove.
