VICTORIAN CHRISTMAS POSTER SPORTING NEWS PENFIELDThe2FunAdGuyz offer a new print of a late 1800s Victorian style Christmas poster done by Edward Penfield for the Illustrated Sporting News. This poster exudes an upper class, sporting lifestyle with a man and woman engaging in a Christmas toast with a loving cup. The couple stands in front of a roaring fireplace decorated with Christmas wreath and garland. Above the fireplace mantle are a series of sporting pictures featuring a variety of sports. Featured in these illustrations, from left to right, are a pole-vaulter, football player, woman driving a trotter, tennis and baseball player. The couple is dressed in riding clothes and both hold riding crops. The front of the fireplace uses decorative tiles to illustrate an old Scottish proverb: East, West, Hames [homes] best. This is a classic Edward Penfield illustration, conveying the warmth of the season.

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE: These Christmas posters were used to advertise the Christmas Editions of popular magazines. At the time of this cover, the upper classes were one of the few to enjoy sports since leisure time was not plentiful for others. It is rare to find a Christmas-themed poster for this era that also features sports icons.
ARTIST: The pictograph of Edward Penfield is printed on the lower right hand corner. In the late 19th and early 20th Century, Edward Penfield was a huge influence on the artistic cultural landscape. As an illustrator and artist, Penfield was to have a productive and prolific career. Though his name is synonymous with Harper's Weekly, where he produced multitudes of covers and illustrations, he also did posters and paintings that fetch incredible sums today. He once said that We are a bit tired of the very serious nowadays, and a little frivolity is refreshing; and yet frivolity to be successful must be most thoroughly studied. Combining a whimsical touch with a studied technique, he made an enduring contribution to the world of popular culture and the fine arts.
