The 8th of Handel’s Chandos Anthems dates from about 1717-1718 and was written for performance at St. Lawrence’s Church at Cannons Park, Edgware, London. Characteristically, Handel then reused ideas from the score in other works, and this concerto movement for two horns accompanied by 2 oboes and strings is based on the opening section of the anthem.

The arrangement survives today in a single manuscript in the British Library, and may have been written at any time between about 1720 and 1738. The horn has first been heard in London at the end of the 17th century, but it is not until the 1730s that we know the details of any of the players for whom it may have been written. Among them is Christopher Winch, who played in “Mr. Handel’s operas and oratorios for several years” and probably wrote the first horn tutor to appear in England, The Compleat Tutor, in 1746. Another possibility is that Handel made the arrangement for the famous Hungarian player known simply as “Mr. Charles”, who made his debut in a concerto for two horns at the Drury Lane Theatre, London on 3rd March 1738.

This arrangement for two horn and piano or organ was first performed at the 36th International Horn Symposium in Valencia in July 2004 by the horn players Raul Diaz and Thomas Müller. An optional Part 1 in Bb for Trumpet and an optional Part 2 in C for Trombone have been added to increase the versatility of the piece.

Domestic Shipping:  Shipping will be $5.00 through USPS Priority Mail and will be added to the final auction price.  If additional pieces of sheet music are ordered through our Ebay store the highest initial shipping cost will be charged and each additional item will only be charged an $1.50 per item.
