PRINT: "Doerr, Williams and DiMaggio of the Red Sox Show Their Reach at Fenway Park," circa 1940. Photograph by Leslie Jones. From the Leslie Jones Collection of the Boston Public Library.
In a recent interview, Dom had the following reminiscence: "I had to make the break through the PCL [Pacific Coast League] wearing glasses, once I came to the majors I had to do the same thing all over again. As far as I was concerned the glasses were not a hindrance, but everybody else at the time seemed to (think) that it might be. Back then, young fellas wearing glasses were not typical timber for professional athletics. So I kind of feel, that in my own way, my breakthrough not only in PCL, but then going from there into the major leagues and making the breakthrough with the Boston Red Sox, opened up the floodgates for all young kids who aspired to be professional athletes who wore glasses."
