What type of oil should I use to cook popcorn?
The type of oil that you use will effect the taste of the popcorn. The most common type that is used is coconut oil. It normally is regarded as the best tasting and has long been a staple at movie theaters. However, many health conscious people prefer canola oil due to its lower fat and cholesterol content Other types that are often used are sunflower, peanut and soy.
What makes popcorn pop?
A popcorn kernel actually has approximately 12% moisture inside of it. As you heat up the kernel the moisture turns into steam and expands. Once the kernel reaches 475 degrees Fahrenheit the expanding steam forces the hull to explode (or pop).
DID YOU KNOW
Peruvian cultures ate popcorn 1,000 years ago and European explorers enjoyed the treat as they traveled through the Americas in the early 1600's. But popcorn really caught on in the late 1800's and remained a popular, inexpensive treat through the Great Depression. With TV's introduction, fewer people went to the movies and popcorn consumption slowed. Then the popcorn industry encouraged the public to eat popcorn while they watched TV at home and sales started to rise. The introduction of microwave popcorn in the 1980's also boosted sales.
Fun Popcorn Facts:
- The oldest ears of popcorn ever found are 5,600 years old.
- The first popcorn machine was invented in 1885.
- Americans consume 17.3 billion quarts of popcorn each year.
