For you salties out there, RockPrep is the cleaning system to use for scrubbing newly acquired live rock. You want to do this scrubbing as part of live rock preparation before you introduce the live rock into your tank. The product comes in a plastic bottle with a built-in stiff brush. Scrub your live rock with this brush, applying the liquid RockPrep as you go. It is also a good idea also to use a brand new, never used before, toothbrush to get into the tighter nooks and crannies of the rock. Scrub off various debris and unwanted growth, such as sponge and tunicates that will not likely last very long in your captive ocean reef. Removing these items now will help avoid a fouled tank later.
After scrubbing down the live rock, perform your normal “cycling” process to cure the rock so it can be added to your reef safely. After you are finished curing the live rock, scrub and clean it again. Then place it into your display tank with confidence.

About Cycling: ACCELERATE THE TIME TO CYCLE your new live rock by cleaning it first, allowing you to 'get on with the show' much quicker and safely. Before adding any new live rock to your display tank you should always clean it and 'cycle' it. Live rock, boxed up and in transit, will experience some amount of die off, however small or large.
Let the rock tell you when it is ready to be introduced into your valuable display tank. The condition of the live rock will determine whether cycling will take days or weeks. Live rock that is ready for your display tank should smell FRESH and pleasant. It should not have any unpleasant odor, at all. It should not have detritus and other bits and pieces loosely hanging to it. RockPrep makes it easier for you to scrub and clean the rock and for it to cycle faster.
For the more technically interested you can measure the ammonia levels and the nitrate levels after introducing live rock to a tank for cycling. This could be an auxilliary tank. You will be looking for the ammonia to rise to a very high level and then fall off. This will be followed by a similar spike in the nitrate level. Finally both of these levels should drop off until you pretty much cannot register a reading on either of them. In other words they drop off to zero, in practical terms.
