How to Use Enzyme-Based Pet Stain and Odor Removers:
Because you may have tried to clean these spots before, you may have used a detergent based product on the stain which now has left a detergent film on the carpet fibers which the enzymes will not be able to penetrate.
1. You will need to flush the area with clear warm water several times to break down and remove this film before treating with the odor remover.
2. Soak and blot up the excess water, if you can use a wet-dry vac, it will help.
3. Saturate the area with the cleaner. Be generous with the product, saturating the carpeting all the way to the floor as the urine has soaked all the way down into the carpet pad, which must be treated as well. Remember to treat an area TWICE the size of the stain because when the animal urinates the carpet padding underneath will wick the urine out to twice the size of the stain that you can see. You must treat the padding underneath or else the animal will continue to smell the pheromones from the urine and continue coming back to the same spot.
4. Soak a few paper towels in the solution and cover the treated area, then cover with plastic. White garbage bags work great, but avoid plastic with print as the ink could "tattoo" the carpet. Use phone books or other weighty objects to hold the corners of the plastic down.
5. Leave this wet, covered area alone for up to 24 hours. The product must have at least 24 hours, preferably 48 hours, to digest the protein in the urine. The area must stay moist and not be allowed to dry out for this time period.
6. After 24 to 48 hours, remove the plastic and wet paper towels, blot up excess moisture or use the wet-dry vac. Then let dry naturally. You can decrease the drying time with a fan if you want.
7. Resist the temptation to shampoo this area. The product should not be removed from the carpet.
8. For really bad stains you may need to treat twice.
